This volume collects Christopher Middleton’s translations of selected poems and letters of Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843), and includes commentary in the form of notes, essays, and an introduction. Poet Christopher Middleton (1927–2015), described by John Lucas as “easily the most intelligent and serious of our innovators”, was a highly regarded translator of writers such as Robert Walser, Paul Celan, Elias Canetti, Nietzsche, and Christa Wolf.
